Feeling a little hopeless this morning – such is the life of a Leafs fan – game against Boston tonight. Not sure if I will be more sour if they come out flying and win the game or if they just stink it up and lose. Probably sour either way 🙂
Okay, let’s talk about things that make me happy – hockey exercises!
EOTW: Feeling Your Hamstrings in 3D
How many of you stretch your hamstrings? Show of hands please……
1…2…3…4…5…7 – wow! Only SEVEN of you stretch your hamstrings at all? Okay, I can live with that. The truth is that some of you who have tight hamstrings don’t really need to stretch them at all – but that is a topic for another day – let’s assume you all need a little more flexibility there.
I want you to try this exercise – do 10-15 rotations on each side for a nice stretch, but also so you can actually FEEL the different portions of your hamstring – how when you rotate your pelvis you will actually feel other areas of your posterior thigh come into more of a stretch.

This highlights the impact of position on muscle activation and why functional hockey training programs translate so well onto the ice, they get you into those multi-planar movement patterns compared to the typical sagittal plane (forward and back), fixed path gym training programs. Dangerously close to going on a rant there…but that is for another day.
Give this exercise a try – feel your hamstrings in 3D for the first time in your life, it will only take you 60 seconds.
All the best for an awesome day!
Cheers,
M
