Butterfly Goalies: Is that pinch actually a hip impingement?

off ice agility drill for goaliesAs I continue to study the science and mechanics of off ice goalie training, I am intruiged by the number of hip impingement injuries that seem to occur in hockey goalies who play with the butterfly style. My mission as a strength and conditioning coach to goaltenders (and all the athletes I train) is to create off ice goalie drills that will minimize the risk of injury while maximizing performance on the ice.

I asked some of my colleagues over at HockeyStrengthandConditioning.com  and none of us were sure if the increased incidence was due to better diagnosis or an actual increase in femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS).  Here is a summary of  what FAIS is and a few ways you may be able to reduce the risk of irritating it.  If you ever get a pinching feeling in the front of you hip, then read this article.

What hockey goalies need to know about the pinch in their hip.

Maria
