Welcome to this week’s Goalie Training Pro Live Q&A with Maria Mountain. Let’s get right to it!
Choosing Between Varsity and Beer League Programs
A question came in from a goalie who was debating between the in-season varsity program and the in-season beer league program. While he plays in a beer league, he’s athletic and wanted to know if the varsity program would suit him better. Since this is an in-season program, the varsity option can be a good fit. The workouts are designed to be challenging without overloading players who are also skating two to three times a week.
Off-Season Training Guides and Scheduling Tips
For those wondering about off-season training resources, there are likely multiple episodes on Goalie Training Pro TV’s YouTube channel covering off-season progressions. The best way to find those is by using the channel’s search function and typing “off-season.”
As for combining strength and stamina training in a single session, it’s possible — just make sure to do strength training first, followed by stamina exercises. Overtraining is unlikely if you’re following the structured mini workouts I share on YouTube. However, avoid overloading yourself by combining too many different videos into one session.
Managing Sever’s Disease in Young Athletes
A viewer asked about managing Sever’s disease, a condition similar to Osgood-Schlatter’s but affecting the heel. While it’s a self-limiting condition that resolves with growth, discomfort can persist. Managing pain through rest, stretching, and appropriate footwear can help. For instance, ensuring your child wears supportive shoes with a slight heel lift can reduce stress on the Achilles. Icing the area before and after activity may also offer relief.
