Welcome to another insightful session from GoalieTrainingPro.com, where we delve into the intricacies of goalie training and performance enhancement. This week, Maria, from Goalie Training Pro TV, shared valuable tips and answered pressing questions from the goalie community. Let’s dive into the highlights and key takeaways from this session.
Running, Racing, and Consistency
Although hockey is the sport she trains others for, Maria shared her personal passion for running. Unlike hockey, which she plays for fun, running is where she holds herself to a higher competitive standard.
Recently, she raced two 8Ks in one day—one in the morning to hit a personal goal (which she surpassed) and another at night with her husband Paul, running under headlamps for fun. Next up, she has a 25-mile mountain run, followed by her key race of the season: a 25K trail run.
Her takeaway for goalies was clear: when you train consistently and for your specific goals, the results come.
She also revealed bigger adventures on the horizon. Next fall, she and Paul plan to take on the Tour du Mont Blanc, a 100+ mile trek circling Mont Blanc through France, Italy, and Switzerland. They’ll aim to complete it in nine days instead of the typical eleven. Maria also has her eye on trying a Hyrox competition for the first time next year.
The Mailbag: Merch, Mobility, and Injury Recovery
Moving into the mailbag, Maria addressed a question sparked by a recent video where she showed off a custom jersey from Akros Athletic. A viewer asked if she’d ever consider selling her own branded jerseys.
While flattered by the idea, Maria explained that she doesn’t want to run a merchandise business right now. Her focus remains on delivering value to her athletes in the Turning Pro Coaching Program and the Game Winning Goalie Formula. For now, merch stays as a fun bonus—rewards she occasionally sends to athletes in her programs.
Another question came from a 64-year-old goalie with decades of experience who had used Maria’s Butterfly Challenge program to increase hip mobility—only to suffer a ruptured Achilles tendon shortly after. Now recovered, he wanted to know how best to regain strength and mobility.
Maria’s advice was practical and layered:
- Start with physical therapy to ensure a proper foundation.
- Rebuild movement patterns first, not just isolated muscles like the calves.
- Recognize that rehab isn’t just about being “healed”—it’s about restoring full, functional movement.
- Returning to the Butterfly Challenge after time off could help regain lost hip mobility.
She emphasized that athletes often think about strengthening one specific muscle after injury, but true recovery comes from re-training the whole system—stability, strength, and then speed.
Wrapping It Up
As the Q&A wrapped, Maria reminded her audience that she won’t be live for the next two Thursdays but will be back soon. In the meantime, new content will continue rolling out on her YouTube channel.
